Hot Water Installation Cost in Canberra: What Your Quote Should Include

Hot water installation costs depend on the unit, access and the plumbing, gas or electrical work needed. For an installed price, request a hot water installation quote in Canberra with photos of the old system. Here’s what the quote should cover and how to compare the long-term cost.

Compare purchase and running costs

For this worked example, suppose option A costs $2,000 installed and $700 a year in energy, while option B costs $4,000 installed and $300 a year. The $400 annual energy saving would repay the extra $2,000 in five years. These are example figures. Use your own quotes and energy estimates to compare real offers.

Illustrative option Installed cost Annual energy cost 10-year total
A $2,000 $700 $9,000
B $4,000 $300 $7,000
Illustrative 10-year purchase and energy cost
Option A

$9,000
Option B

$7,000
Calculation: installed price + 10 × annual energy cost. Excludes financing, maintenance, tariff changes, replacement and discounting. These are examples, not measured savings.

Simple payback is useful but incomplete. If the more expensive system needs a switchboard upgrade, include it. If gas remains connected for heating or cooking, do not count all gas supply charges as avoided. If solar electricity would otherwise be exported, its opportunity cost also belongs in the comparison.

What changes the installation price?

A like-for-like replacement in an accessible location is a different job from moving the system or changing energy source. The exact model, capacity, labour, access and connections affect the work. Ask for the complete installed amount, the GST treatment and the conditions attached to any estimate. National price averages cannot tell you what your property requires.

Do not assume that a low unit price includes delivery, valves, installation or disposal. A higher quote may include work the cheaper one excludes. Get the differences in writing.

What should be itemised?

  • Brand, model number, capacity and energy type.
  • Delivery and the work needed to position the new unit.
  • Plumbing labour, connections and required valve work.
  • Electrical or gas work, including who will perform it.
  • Removal and disposal of the existing system, or a clear exclusion.
  • Testing, handover, warranty documentation and payment terms.

Ask how site variations are approved. A quote should explain whether additional work requires your agreement before it starts.

How much does it cost to install a 250L hot water system?

The 250L label alone is not enough to price an installation. Tell your installer the old and proposed model, element rating, location and access. Check that connection positions, the base and required clearances suit the replacement. The electrical supply must also be assessed where relevant.

Replacing a tank in the same position can still require changes to the connections or electrical supply. Before deciding between capacities, read whether a 250L hot water system is enough.

Plumber or electrician: who pays for which work?

Ask who is responsible for arranging electrical work and whether it is inside the quoted total. A licensed plumber handles the relevant plumbing; electrical work needs the appropriate electrical licence. Gas work also requires the relevant authorisation. Agree the sequence so a new tank is not installed but left waiting for a connection.

In a unit or apartment, check access arrangements, isolation of shared services and any approval process with the building manager. These practical issues can affect timing as well as cost.

Comparing running costs as well as purchase cost

A cheaper changeover does not necessarily deliver the lowest household bill. Compare your electricity or gas tariff, daily demand and whether you plan to change other appliances. Use assumptions that match your home rather than treating an old annual running-cost figure as a current quote.

Our hot water system comparison covers the main choices. If a heat pump is under consideration, check rebate eligibility before accepting a quote. Do not subtract a rebate that has not been confirmed.

Retail unit or supply-and-install package?

If you are buying from a retailer, establish who checks suitability before purchase and who handles a fault afterwards. A supply-and-install package may simplify coordination, but its inclusions still need checking. For a specific retail example, see what Bunnings hot water installation includes.
